ADDITIONAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION

"Listen? Listen for What?" Dale Warland, clinician

Demonstration of the advanced interpretive, technical, and conducting concepts that can be established and applied to modern music in every rehearsal and performance. The first presentation will utilize movements from Arvo Pärts Berliner Messe and from Irving Fines The Hour-Glass, with the Rice Chorale, from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, as the demonstration choir. The Chorale is conducted by Mr. Thomas Jaber. We recommend that you bring these scores with you to the conference. Musical Resources, from Toledo, Ohio, currently has the scores available for purchase. They can be contacted at 1-800-377-0234, or orders@musical-resources.com. Musical Resources will also have a limited number of the scores available for purchase at their exhibit at the conference.

  • Arvo Pärt, Berliner Messe (organ version, 1990, rev. 2002, UE 32 989)
  • Irving Fine, The Hour-Glass
    • Have you seen the white lily grow (Boosey & Hawkes, 48001071)
    • O do not wanton with those eyes (Boosey & Hawkes, 48001072)
    • Lament (Boosey & Hawkes, 48001074)

Dr. Warland's second session will focus on the two works by Howells and Mathias that are listed below. Scores for both will be provided by NCCO for all who pre-register.

  • Herbert Howells: Take Him, Earth, For Cherishing
  • William Mathias: Ceremony After a Fire Raid

Loving, Dying or Really Dead:the Subtext Will Rule Joan Catoni Conlon, clinician

A discussion of how text -- its meter, rhyme and form, ITS SOUNDS, ITS REPETITIONS, its intensity of meaning and its hidden meaning, even its missing punctuation will affect interpretation in choral performance. While the focus will be on Monteverdi's secular music, the same principles of articulation and of linking text to performance are applicable to composers in later centuries. Complimentary editions will be available. The University of Texas San Antonio Madrigal Singers, John Silantien, conductor, will be the demonstration choir for this session.
