Duane Cottrell received a Bachelor of Music Education from Louisiana State University where he studied under Kenneth Fulton. After holding positions in churches for a number of years, he returned to teach in San Antonio's Northside ISD where he led the choral program at John Jay High School. Duane completed a Master of Music at the University of North Texas in May 2007, where he studied choral conducting with Jerry McCoy and voice science and pedagogy with Dr. Stephen F. Austin, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral conducting at UNT. Duane has been a member of the UNT A Cappella Choir since 2005, served as the associate conductor of the UNT Concert Choir, a select 68-voice undergraduate choir directed by Alan McClung, and is currently the director of the UNT Men's Chorus and teaches Fundamentals of Conducting.

Duane has previously had an article published in the Choral Journal entitled "Voice Science in the Choral Rehearsal: Examining Vocal Tone." He has presented lectures on voice science at the 2007 Texas Music Educators Association convention, the 4th International Conference on the Physiology and Acoustics of Singing, and will be presenting at the American Choral Directors Association convention in March of 2009. He is currently writing a thesis entitled, "The Effect of Glottal Closure Exercises on an Untrained Male Chorus," and will complete his DMA in May of 2009.
